Former President John Dramani Mahama has justified his administration’s decision to replace nursing trainee allowances with a student loan scheme, stating that the move was aimed at creating more job opportunities for nursing graduates.

Speaking to trainee nurses as part of his campaign tour ahead of the December 7th elections, Mahama emphasized the importance of employment over allowances during training.

He explained that the policy was implemented to allow the government to focus resources on job creation for nurses after graduation. “What is important for you is not the allowances, it is to get the jobs when you finish school,” Mahama told the trainees.

He criticized the current government’s promise to restore the allowances, calling it a deceptive move that has not been fully realized, as many trainees have not received the promised payments.

Mahama assured the nurses that an NDC government would prioritize job creation by completing hospital projects that were abandoned by the current administration and finishing the Agenda 111 hospitals.

“I’ll make you a promise, when I come, the hospitals we were building that have been abandoned by this government, we will continue them. When I come, the Agenda 111 hospitals they are building, I’ll continue and finish them so that we can create more space to absorb all of you when you finish school,” he pledged.

The former president’s remarks are part of his broader campaign message that highlights his commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and addressing unemployment among nursing graduates.

Mahama’s focus on job creation resonates with the concerns of many trainee nurses who are eager for employment opportunities after completing their education.
